Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter are among several mayors backing an Amtrak plan for expanded passenger rail service.
The mayors of the two Minnesota cities plus Chicago, Milwaukee, and Madison wrote a letter to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg Thursday saying there’s a potential for passenger rail to bring opportunity to the Midwest region, connecting cities nationwide “in a more sustainable manner.”
Amtrak first revealed plans early this month for what it would do if the Biden administration’s two-point-three-trillion-dollar infrastructure package is passed.
The plan includes a new route extending from Duluth to Milwaukee, joining the busy Hiawatha service to Chicago.
