Winter officially began on December 21st and people in the area are starting to take advantage of activities that are able to be done during the season, which includes ice skating and cross country skiing.
City of Fergus Falls Public Works Director Len Taylor said, “We haven’t had the conducive weather to building ice so we’re hoping that we can get those rinks ready and useable. They were semi-ready before the Christmas holiday last week and they did get some use, but there were still some bare spots.”
Mr. Taylor is expecting this week’s weather will be beneficial for the outdoor rinks. He said, “We’re hopeful with this coming cold weather, we’ll get them built up and in good shape for maybe a couple months of outdoor skating.”
The rinks in Fergus Falls that residents are encouraged to enjoy are at Cleveland, Channing, Lake Alice and a newer option on Pebble Lake (located just beside the public boat access).
Taylor added there are a few different times for open skating up at the public community arena. You can the city’s website and the FF Hockey Association website have the calendar for opening skating.
There will be a cross country trail groomed up at the Kirkbride Park for cross country skiing. According to Taylor, the Fergus Falls Cross Country Ski Club have made it so that they can use a groomer from the DNR with the partnership that they have. The city has a piece of equipment that can move the groomer. A great setting up there.
