Twelve years ago, Someplace Safe opened up its first thrift store in Alexandria. Then nine years ago, another thrift store started in Morris. This year, a third thrift store is set to open in Fergus Falls.
Sheila Korby, Executive Director with Someplace Safe, said, “The stores open as a way to not only raise funds for the agency, but also to connect our clients to resources that they need.” She explained, “This is a place where our clients can go, at no cost to them, with vouchers from us, to get furniture and dishes and things that they would need to start a new life.”
Korby added, “Otter Tail County is our first location ever, so our Fergus office is kind of our home office. This is the office where the highest number of clients come out of, so it’s really exciting that clients are going to be able to access resources in a way that they haven’t been able to through the agency before.”
According to Korby, construction is almost complete at this point. The main work being done is electrical and doing things like putting in shelving/clothing racks and setting up donation processing areas.
Anyone can donate gently used merchandise or gently used items to the store. Someplace Safe is asking for people to call first, but typically donations can be made 10a-4p Monday through Friday.
The Thrift Store will be located at 204 W. Cavour in Fergus Falls. This is the former Goodwill in the Ben Franklin strip mall. The planned hours for the store are Monday through Friday 9a-6p and Saturday 10a-5p.
