DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Two people were seriously injured and trapped in their bed after a vehicle crashed into the motel they were staying in, in Detroit Lakes, Saturday.
Emergency Services from multiple agencies were dispatched to a crash on Saturday, May 7 at 702 West Lake Drive in Detroit Lakes. Responders from the Detroit Lakes Police and Fire Departments, Becker County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol and Essentia/St. Mary’s EMS all worked together to safely remove the injured trapped in debris, identified as Frank Benninger, 77 and Jacklyn Benninger, 77 from Detroit Lakes.
Reports also indicated a significant natural gas leak occurred due to the crash which was addressed by the Detroit Lakes Fire Department and Minnesota Energy.
The driver of the vehicle left the scene, however, witnesses provided a description of the vehicle as well as a license plate for the vehicle. While all units were responding to the scene, a Detroit Lakes Police Officer spotted a vehicle matching the involved vehicle’s description parked on Rossman Avenue at Reynolds Street. A
person was located with that vehicle and after further investigation Wade Olds, 53 from Detroit Lakes was arrested.
Olds was booked into the Becker County Jail and has been charged with Criminal Vehicular Operation – Great Bodily Harm – Under Influence of Alcohol and Traffic Collision Driver Fail to Stop – Injury or Death.
The investigation is ongoing.
