At approximately 1:16 Saturday afternoon, the Otter Tail County Dispatch received a report of a water accident and possible drowning on South Lida Lake, east of Pelican Rapids.
It was learned that 48 year old Eric Fife had been boating with friends when he entered the water, while trying to retrieve his dog, which had jumped off of the boat and into the lake.
Moments later, it became apparent to his companions that Mr. Fife was in distress and struggling to stay above water. A friend entered the water and pulled both Mr. Fife and his dog back to the boat, and lifesaving efforts were initiated by his boating companions.
The friends continued providing CPR, until first responders arrived at a nearby lake access and relieved them.
However, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and Mr. Fife passed away at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
The Ringdahl Ambulance Service, Pelican Rapids Police Department, Maplewood State Park staff, and the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office assisted that the scene.
