Excessive drinking cost Minnesotans nearly eight billion dollars ($7.85 B) in 2019 — or about 14-hundred dollars ($1,383) per Minnesota resident.

That’s according to a new study from the Minnesota Department of Health (M-D-H). M-D-H’s Kari Gloppen says about three-quarters of the costs are associated with binge drinking.

She describes binge drinking as four or more drinks during one occasion for women and five or more drinks per occasion for men.

Gloppen says most of the costs were calculated through lost productivity, health care costs, and other costs such as those related to criminal justice and motor vehicle crashes.
