Two New CWD Management Zones Declared In Minnesota

(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has announced two new chronic wasting disease management zones for the fall hunting season.

Both are in the northern part of the state. Deer permit area 179 is now DPA 679, located in the Iron Range. DPA 261 is relabeled as 661 near the Grand Forks metro area.

Testing is mandatory for the opening weekend of firearms season starting November 5th. Carcasses cannot be taken out of the management zone before a negative test result is obtained. Samples can be turned in at staffed or self-service stations.

There are three tiers of CWD zones. The least restrictive is surveillance, followed by control and then management. Central Minnesota is unaffected, with the greatest problem area being the state’s southeastern corner towards Winona and La Crosse.
