The Fergus Falls Fire Department responded at 02:53 AM on Thursday, February 16th for a reported kitchen fire in an apartment unit at 623 West Fir. The Fergus Falls Police arrived and observed moderate smoke in the first-floor hallway.
They began evacuating tenants from the 3 story, 36-unit building. Upon the arrival of the Fire Department, crews entered the apartment unit to conduct fire extinguishment and search. Fire crews encountered high heat and heavy smoke.
All occupants were able to exit safely.
Fire damage was extensive but contained to the apartment unit of origin. The common hallways sustained light to moderate smoke damage.
Fire crews spent approximately 2 hours ventilating smoke and carbon monoxide from the building.
Due to smoke damage in the hallway, tenants from 5 additional apartment units were displaced.
The Red Cross is assisting with temporary amenities. The remaining tenants were allowed back into their apartment units.
The Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Fergus Falls Police Department, Ringdahl EMS, MN State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the property manager.
Damage is likely to exceed $80,000.
The fire is being investigated by the MN State Fire Marshal’s Office and Fire Department.
The Fire Department was on scene for approximately 3 hours and responded with 3 Engine’s, 1 Ladder Truck, 1 Rescue Truck, and 4 Command Staff.
