(St. Paul, MN) — Two bills that would make changes to state taxes on Social Security income will be heard today in the Minnesota House Tax Committee.

One measure would fully eliminate Minnesota tax on Social Security income. The second bill would exempt 80 percent of seniors from paying state taxes on their Social Security benefits.

The House nonpartisan Research Department says more than 50 percent of households receiving Social Security currently pay zero state taxes on their benefits.

Republicans and some Democrats want to eliminate all state tax on Social Security income, but Governor Tim Walz and other DFLers oppose tax breaks for the wealthiest Minnesotans.
