American Legion National Commander Vincent James “Jim” Troiola made a stop in Underwood today (April 20th), as part of his multiday tour across the state to discuss issues vital to Minnesota veterans.

Troiola was warmly welcomed by the Underwood School band, which performed the Star-Spangled Banner, as well as a color guard, the American Legion of Underwood’s Commander, and other members.

During his visit, Troiola addressed the pressing issue of veteran suicide and introduced The American Legion’s “Be the One” campaign.

The program aims to destigmatize asking for mental health support, provide peer-to-peer support and resources, and educate everyone on how they can “Be the One” to make a difference.

Veteran suicide is currently the number one issue facing the veteran community, with an estimated 17 to 22 veterans or service members taking their lives each day, totaling more than 6,000 annually.

The rate of suicide for veterans is over 50% higher than that of non-veteran adults.

Troiola emphasized the importance of raising awareness and assisting veterans, as the stigma associated with mental health issues often prevents them from seeking help.

Family members may be the first to recognize signs that a loved one needs help, but they may not know how to approach the situation.

The “Be the One” campaign encourages everyone to ask veterans in their lives how they are doing, listen when a veteran need to talk, and reach out when a veteran is struggling.

The program is designed to help all veterans, acknowledging that everyone responds differently to stresses, has different life experiences, and may have varying results from treatment types.

Veterans themselves are urged to talk about their feelings, ask for help when needed, and remember that millions of people are ready to help them and that their family and friends care.

Troiola also spoke about the importance of membership in the American Legion, and breakfast was served following the discussions.

Minnesota American Legion Commander Jennifer Havlick encouraged members of the public and all supporters of veterans to hear what Troiola has to say.

The American Legion, with a membership of almost 2 million wartime veterans, was founded in 1919 and focuses on a strong national security, veterans’ affairs, Americanism, and youth programs.

Legionnaires work to improve their communities through nearly 13,000 posts across the nation and overseas, including 538 in Minnesota.

Troiola’s tour began on Monday, April 17, in West Duluth’s Post 71 and will continue with visits to various locations, including Camp Ripley in the afternoon.

Troiola, a life member of American Legion Post 1682 in Rockland County, NY, served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves from 1969 to 1974. His theme as national commander is “V.E.T.S., Veterans, Education, Teamwork, and Sponsor.”
