Spring is in full swing as the City of Fergus Falls embarks on its annual water main flushing campaign. Starting today, May 1st, and continuing throughout the month, city crews will be conducting their rounds, flushing fire hydrants.

Each hydrant flush is expected to take between 30 and 60 minutes.

Public Works Director Len Taylor highlighted the many benefits of this yearly maintenance ritual.

“As water sits in the hydrant and water lines, it can accumulate minerals and sediment over time,” explained Taylor.

The process not only helps maintain water quality but also serves as a preventive safety measure, allowing crews to inspect the operation and flow of each hydrant.

“Our fire crews rely on immediate and dependable water flow and pressure when fighting fires,” Taylor added.

Residents may experience fluctuations in water pressure and some discoloration during the flushing process.

To clear any sediment in the line, it is recommended to let faucets run on cold for about five minutes or until the water runs clear after a nearby hydrant has been flushed.

It is also advised to avoid washing dishes or doing laundry during this time, as discoloration may occur.

The water released during flushing returns to the groundwater supply through local rivers and streams.

Should residents have any concerns or experience discolored water after several hours, they are encouraged to contact the public works department at 218-332-5435.
