In the month of May, a series of alarming incidents have hit the businesses in Otter Tail County, including Fergus Falls.
A scam involving phony phone calls has left local businesses at a considerable loss of several thousands of dollars.
Pretending to be Agents of Law Enforcement or actual Officers, the unidentified callers targeted both businesses and individuals.
These impersonators insisted on immediate and secretive action under the pretext of an urgent situation.
The victims were directed to purchase gift cards and share the card numbers, which were subsequently drained of funds.
As part of their deceptive tactic, the so-called officers urged the victims not to disclose these transactions to family members or local law enforcement.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, in response to these reported incidents, has issued a public reminder.
Individuals and businesses receiving similar or suspicious calls have been advised to immediately report them to their local law enforcement office.
The Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigations into these incidents are currently ongoing.
