Fire at Fergus Grain Elevator 11-12-2023

The Fergus Falls Fire Department received the call at approximately 6:30 Sunday evening to the Farmers elevator at 406 E Junius Avenue. According to Fergus Falls Fire Chief Ryan Muchow, “the fire started in the dryer shortly after the staff at the elevator switched over to soybeans.”

Chief Muchow stated, “there was some concern about the main elevator leg to the west.  This was due to the amount of fire that was there and the exposures”.  The Fergus Falls Fire Department set up some water sources to the aerial devices and their engines, and began to apply water.

With the blaze in the middle of town, the Fergus Falls Fire Department called in mutual aid from the Underwood, Elizabeth, and Dalton Fire Departments. Ladder trucks from Perham and Breckenridge Fire Departments were also called in to help battle the blaze.

The Underwood crew was tasked early on to go in and start opening up the dryer. Chief Muchow said; “Ultimately all of the product will need to come out of there to make the situation better.”

With the fire contained the shelter in place order was lifted at around 8:35 Sunday night.
