Anglers in Otter Tail County gearing up for the ice fishing season are encountering a slow start due to fluctuating temperatures, prompting the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office to issue a cautionary reminder for the public.
The importance of exercising caution and using common sense when venturing out onto the ice.
To assist anglers in making informed decisions, the department provided recommended minimum ice thickness guidelines for new, clear ice.
The guidelines serve as a valuable reference for determining the safety of different activities on the ice.
The recommended minimum ice thickness, in inches, and corresponding activities are as follows:
- On foot: 4″
- ATV: 5-7″
- Snowmobile: 9-12″
- Side-by-side or heavy-duty vehicle: 13-17″
- Car or truck with wheelhouse: 20+”
These guidelines, issued in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources, are designed to promote safe ice-related activities.
