Hawley, MN (KDLM) – The City of Hawley and the surrounding area will be coming together to say a Big “Thank you” to the many firefighters and other first responders who battled a fire at the Hawley Co-Op Elevator in February.

First Responders Appreciation night will be happening on Saturday, April 27 and will run 4:30-7:00 p.m. at the Hawley High School Gymnasium.

A ceremony and social is being planned, with Food and Entertainment for the first responders.

There will be Brats, Hot dogs and Root beer floats to be served by the Hawley Jaycees and Women of Today.

The First Emergency call came from a passing BNSF train around 11:00 pm. on Sunday, February 25.

High winds whipped the flames, as dozens of firefighters and many more First Responders were called in to help.

Personnel from 17 Fire departments were on scene to assist in hauling water from other locations.

The elevator is in the downtown area of Hawley.

Wind carried some embers and debris over a large part of the city.

Firefighters were also spraying water on trees and homes, to keep them from starting on fire.

Free will donations will be accepted and distributed evenly between the Hawley Fire Department, Hawley Emergency Response Team (H-E-R-T), and the Hawley Police Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and is to be conducted by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
