Fergus Falls, MN – The Fergus Falls Fire Department responded to a reported basement fire at 629 West Spruce Street at around 8:40 Tuesday night.

By the time first responders arrived, the sole occupant had evacuated herself from the home, and smoke was visible on the main level of the building.

Members of the Fire Department entered the basement and found a dehumidifier burning.

Crews had the fire under control within 5 minutes of arriving at the home.

The dehumidifier and property around it were destroyed due to the fire, and the entire home had moderate smoke damage, with the total damage estimated to $10,000.

Fortunately, there was no damage to the structure itself.

Fergus Falls Fire Chief Ryan Muchow encourages a clear space around operating equipment such as a dehumidifier.

The Fergus Falls Fire Department was assisted by the Fergus Falls Police Department, Ringdahl EMS, and Ottertail Power Company.
