Getting Ready for This Year’s Fishing Opener

Fergus Falls, MN – The summer angling season begins this Saturday, and fishing enthusiasts across the state are ready to get out on the water, but some are concerned about water levels after such a warm winter.

DNR Conservation Officer Hanna Wood says lack of snow has greatly affected water levels, however the recent rains have helped get levels back toward the usual averages.

She also says that people planning on going fishing this weekend should make sure that their boat registration is up to date and they bring their 2024 angling license on the boat with them.

Wood emphasizes the importance of having proper flotation devices onboard, saying, “We want to make sure that boats 16 feet or over have a throwable, seat cushion style, personal flotation device.”

The DNR says boat passengers over the age of 10 don’t have to wear their life jacket as long as it is “easily accessible” in an emergency, with the exception of inflatable life jackets.

Wood says, “Inflatable life jackets are getting much more common nowadays, which is great. But they’re only effective when they’re worn, and a lot of them will say on there that they only count as a lifejacket when they’re on. If you have those in a compartment, it doesn’t actually count as a lifejacket.”

Wood also reminds mothers that they can fish without a license this Sunday for Mother’s Day.
