Brandon, MN – The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a Facebook scam from a woman in Brandon on Thursday (May 9th).
According to officials, the victim had been in correspondence with one of her Facebook friends about purchasing a car from them.
Unbeknownst to her, the friend’s profile had been hacked, and she was actually communicating with someone else.
The victim paid $5,000 to the suspect through PayPal twice, totaling $10,000, at which point she learned that she had been scammed.
The Deputy taking the report has stated that the victim’s credit card companies were notified.
While one has stated that they would cancel the transaction, the other company has reportedly not given the victim a definitive answer.
The scam is under investigation by the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department.
