Long time sports personality Craig Olson is receiving a big honor this weekend, he is being inducted into the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association’s Hall of Honor. Olson, currently Sports Director for Leighton Media Fergus Falls, started his broadcast career in 1973, just out of high school, for KDLM in Detroit Lakes.
After covering the Lakers for two years, Craig moved out of state for 6 years, covering sports 3 years each in Missouri and Utah. In 1981 Olson moved to Fergus Falls, where he’s been ever since.
Craig said of the honor; “It’s very humbling and very satisfying. I mean humbling in the sense that you know you never feel like you belong in something like that I never expected it. When you get into your profession, I don’t think you get into it thinking someday, I’m going to be in the hall of fame.” Olson continued; “The satisfying part is when the people that you work with, you know your peers, in this case the coaches and other people in the schools around the area that that we have covered over the years. When they feel that you’ve done your job to appoint where they want to give you special recognition. It’s very satisfying to know that they feel you did your job at that level, but again, very humbling to be a part of the group of coaches and people that are in there.”
Craig credits learning from Oats LeGrand (Craig’s uncle and longtime Fergus Falls radio sports personality) and Ralph Anderson, the Detroit Lakes newspaper man, who Olson said he really learned a lot from when he was just starting in in covering sports.
Craig and the rest of the honorees will be honored guests, recognized, and presented with an award at the MBCA Fall Clinic Awards Luncheon at Minneapolis Hyatt Regency, Friday, October 25, 2024.
