Fargo, ND (KFGO) – Fargo Police responded to an officer-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. in the area of 6100 block of 61st Ave. S. It was initially referred to as a ‘critical incident.”
Preliminary information indicates that officers were dispatched for a medical assist for a suicidal person in a residence. Chief Dave Zibolski says the person made numerous 9-1-1 calls in the hours leading up to the shooting. Officers learned that a 65-year-old person was armed inside the home. Emergency medical services were staged nearby as officers engaged in a dialogue in an attempt to help the individual. After a half-hour of dialogue with officers, the person exited the house with a rifle. The department later corrected the report to say the person had a handgun.
Two officers subsequently discharged their firearms. The individual was dead on the scene. That person’s name will be released Thursday.
Zibolski says one of the officers is a sergeant with eight years of service. The other is an officer with 10 months of experience. Their names will be released Friday.
Fargo Police had contact with the person six times in 2024 prior to this incident with no problems.
Under department policy, both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The department has turned the investigation over to the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation.
Zibolski stated, “We understand that incidents like these are deeply concerning to our community. We are committed to a full and transparent investigation to determine the facts. We ask for the community’s patience as NDBCI works to gather and verify the details surrounding this incident.”
