New York Mills, MN – A man has been sentenced for committing 3rd Degree Burglary in rural New York Mills in 2022 after being identified by a jug of orange juice.

On August 5th, 2022, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a burglary at a residence on State Highway 106, this following multiple reports of two suspicious men in the area. Multiple items were stolen, including a Ruger .22 caliber handgun and a jug of orange juice.

The next day, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from another resident of the area saying that she had also witnessed suspicious activity around the time of the other reports. The woman told officers that two men had come to her door asking for water, assistance, and a ride to Wadena. She claimed one of the men was carrying a jug of orange juice and deputies were able to locate the cap of the jug at the witness’ residence. When shown a lineup of photographs, the witness picked out 34-year-old Jordan Anco of Staples as one of the suspects.

A warrant was issued and Anco was arrested on August 26th, 2022. He was charged with multiple counts of burglary, but in April of this year, Anco pleaded guilty to one count of 3rd Degree Burglary. On Monday (November 18th), he was sentenced to two years in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud. The other man that was with him, 42-year-old Dustin Ayres of Cushing, was sentenced in February.
