St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Supreme Court is siding with the DFL and Secretary of State Steve Simon on what constitutes a quorum in the Minnesota House.

The high court ruled Friday afternoon (January 24th) that it requires 68 members to conduct official business in the House. Republicans used their one-vote majority and 67 members to swear in members and elect a House speaker.

Representative Jeff Backer (R-Browns Valley) issued the following statement on Friday following the Supreme Court decision. “This decision really does not change anything. The fact is the Democrats need to show up for work. They have not done that and I challenge them to do their job and show up for work. House Republicans will be showing up to work on Monday — it’s time for the Democrats to show up.”

DFL House Speaker-designate Melissa Hortman in a statement said, “Republicans tried to seize power that the voters did not give them. Now that it is clear Republicans must work with Democrats for the House to operate. “
