New York Mills, MN – A man from rural New York Mills has been charged with 2nd Degree Assault with a Dangerous Weapon after allegedly putting a gun against his ex’s head.

According to court documents, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a disturbance involving a firearm at around 9 a.m. on Monday, January 27th. At the scene, officers located the complainant and the victim, who confirmed the suspect, 32-year-old Cody William Steinbach, was still in the house. Steinbach eventually left the house and was detained by law enforcement.

The victim told officers that she had just ended her on-again, off-again relationship with Steinbach the evening prior following an argument. Earlier that morning, she contacted Steinbach to retrieve her belongings from his home.

She said when she arrived, Steinbach let her in and she went to the garage to collect her possessions. He then began to push her and tell her to leave, before leaving the garage and returning with a handgun.

The victim claims he fired off a round before pointing the gun at her chest. The victim stood still in the garage as Steinbach then put the gun against her forehead. She told officials that she can’t remember if Steinbach was speaking to her at that time. Shortly after, the complainant arrived at the house, and the victim told them to call the police. Steinbach told the complainant that if they came inside, he would shoot them.

Officials spoke with Steinbach, who confirmed that the pair had been in an argument the night before and the victim had reached out to retrieve her belongings. He says he told her to leave, but she refused. He grabbed his .22 caliber handgun from the bedroom and brought it to the garage.

Steinbach says he fired a round because the victim did not believe the gun was real at first. He claims at one point, the victim approached him with a gardening tool and he inadvertently pointed the gun at her, against her forehead. Steinbach said he did not know why he didn’t call police if she was refusing to leave.

Steinbach made his first court appearance Wednesday morning (January 29th).
