Otter Tail County, MN – Are you prepared for severe weather? Severe Weather Awareness Week, observed from April 7th to 11th, is an annual event sponsored by Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) in collaboration with the National Weather Service (NWS) and local emergency management programs. This week serves as a reminder to everyone about seasonal weather threats and how to stay safe. Understanding the dangers of severe weather and how to respond can save lives.

Statewide Tornado Drills will occur on Thursday, April 10th at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

During these drills, outdoor warning sirens throughout Otter Tail County will sound twice. The first drill is intended for businesses, schools, and other institutions, while the evening drill is designed for second-shift workers and families. Everyone is encouraged to practice their severe weather sheltering plans during these drills. NOTE: There is no such thing as an “all-clear” siren.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the state experiences an average of 29 tornadoes per year. However, in 2021, Minnesota experienced 64 tornadoes, including 22 in a single day on December 15th—the most tornadoes recorded in the state’s history. The record high was set in 2010 with 113 tornadoes, including the devastating tornadoes in Almora-Bluffton and Wadena. Notably, Otter Tail County has experienced the highest number of tornadoes of any county in Minnesota.

As a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, Otter Tail County collaborates with the NWS to enhance individual and community preparedness for severe weather events.
