Fergus Falls, MN – The Fergus Falls Fire Department is reminding people of the dangers of cooking fires after an apartment building near the Riverside Waterfowl Sanctuary caught fire on Sunday afternoon.
According to Training and Safety Division Chief Dan Lipson, firefighters were called to a report of a structure fire caused by a cooking fire on East Cavour Avenue at around 1:46 p.m. Upon arrival, responders saw smoke coming from the unit involved. Lipson says that due to the quick action of another tenant who used a fire extinguisher on the fire, damage was confined to the one apartment unit.
EMS provided on-scene evaluation of the tenants, but there was no need for transportation or further care. Lipson says the damage is estimated to cost $20,000, and the affected unit cannot be occupied. The Red Cross is aiding the displaced tenants.
The fire department was assisted by the Fergus Falls Police Department, Ringdahl EMS, and Ottertail Power Company. Firefighters were on scene for about an hour.
The Fergus Falls Fire Department reminds the community that cooking fires are the leading cause of fires in Minnesota. Lipson says attentive cooking and keeping a fire extinguisher for small fires are good ways to prevent and limit injury or damage if a fire occurs.
