Otter Tail County Sheriff Barry Fitzgibbons
Fergus Falls, MN – The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office has made a statement addressing its status on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) list of “State Sanctuary Jurisdictions.”
DHS recently published — and has since removed — a list of Minnesota counties identified as “State Sanctuary Jurisdictions.” In its list, DHS defines sanctuary jurisdictions as cities, counties, and states that are deliberately obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws and endangering American citizens. The Sheriff’s Offices says Otter Tail County was included on this list without prior notification or explanation.
In an official statement, the Sheriff’s Office says Otter Tail County has not taken any actions — such as passing ordinances, adopting resolutions, or implementing policies — that would designate it as a “sanctuary” jurisdiction. It also says the county complies with all state and federal laws and has received no formal notice of non-compliance with Executive Order 14287 or any federal statute.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office says it maintains strong and ongoing cooperation with its local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking clarification from DHS regarding the basis for its inclusion on the list and the process for correcting any inaccurate designation.
Otter Tail County was one of twenty Minnesota counties on the list.
