Local Lawmakers Respond to Saturday’s Attacks on Fellow Legislators

St. Paul, MN – On Saturday, local legislators spoke out following the shootings of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Mellissa Hortman, Senator John Hoffman, and their spouses.

State Representative Jeff Backer said, “I am horrified by the evil attack that took place overnight, and heartbroken beyond words by the loss of Speaker-Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. My prayers are also with Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette as they recover from this horrific attack. This is unimaginably wrong and horrible. Please keep the victims’ families in your prayers and law enforcement while they track down this evil individual and provide watchful protection for elected representatives and senators.”

State Senator Jordan Rasmusson said in a statement, “I’m deeply heartbroken by the news involving Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. My prayers remain with Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. The violence that unfolded is both shocking and tragic. As we wait for answers, may we hold each other close and pray for peace in our communities.”

Governor Walz has ordered that state and US flags be flown at half-staff to honor fallen House Speaker Hortman.
