St. Paul, MN – A new law taking effect today (July 1st) makes lane splitting and lane filtering legal for motorcyclists in Minnesota—under specific conditions.

Lane splitting allows a motorcycle to pass between vehicles moving in the same direction, as long as traffic is flowing and the rider stays under 25 miles per hour.

Lane filtering is now permitted when other vehicles are stopped or barely moving, as long as the motorcycle doesn’t exceed 15 miles per hour above surrounding traffic. They are only allowed on roadways with two or more lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction.
