Fergus Falls, MN – Sugar High Cannabis Consultation and Dispensary has announced that it will be closing its doors at the end of the month following the Fergus Falls City Council’s decision to not approve the company’s cannabis registration application.
Emily McCune, owner of Sugar High, says she was surprised by the council’s decision. She says, “We submitted an incredibly detailed, thoughtful, comprehensive, and professional application packet that illustrated not only our years of experience, leadership, and education in the industry, but also our value as an already-established business, detailing the revenue we’ve already been generating as the longest established cannabis dispensary in Fergus Falls, as well as the projected revenue to come.”
After the council approved the two registrations required by the state, the other businesses that applied had far less success. Sugar High received 3 yes votes from the council (Fish, Job, Kilde) and 5 no votes. The other three applicants did not even receive resolutions.
McCune says that it feels very obvious that the decision was personal and finds it very unfortunate. She adds, “I have no regrets for the way I’ve conducted myself and my business over the last few years fighting our city council on cannabis-related issues. I don’t regret sticking up for myself and calling out the atrocious behaviors of council members over the years who have behaved unprofessionally and lied to our faces. I don’t regret informing our community of the ridiculously offensive comments city counselors have made stereotyping people who consume cannabis.”
“We are proud of the work we’ve done over the last five years educating our community on responsible cannabis use, providing resources for medical registration, and always having an open door to answer questions and make product recommendations,” McCune continues. “We are not looking at this as a failure. We have failed nothing, and we fought as hard as we could until the bitter end. The only failure here is the city council who failed us by not issuing a cannabis license to the most deserving applicant. Sugar High blazed the trail and paved the way for others to continue the work eliminating the archaic and propaganda-fueled stigma attached to cannabis use and no one can take that away from us.”
McCune says that Sugar High will close its doors on October 31st. The council approved Elevate Cannabis Dispensary and Roy’zzz Real LLC for retail cannabis sales.
