Fergus Falls, MN – A woman was arrested for driving under the influence Sunday afternoon (November 9) after crashing her car with her toddlers inside.

Otter Tail County prosecutors say Fergus Falls police officers responded to a single car crash in the median on I-94 near mile marker 64, east of Fergus Falls, at around 3:47 p.m. At the scene, police found 40-year-old Ashley Heitman of Ada with her SUV in the westbound lane with significant front-end damage.

Court documents say no one was injured, but Heitman’s two kids, ages 2 and 4 years-old, were also in the vehicle. Heitman said she had been driving from the Metro area. Police confirmed driving complaints from three other counties tied to Heitman’s vehicle.

Prosecutors say Heitman showed multiple signs of impairment and was taken into custody. A search of her vehicle found an empty strawberry margarita alcoholic beverage, as well as a 1/4 full vodka mule in the center console. After speaking with an attorney, Heitman consented to a breath test, which showed a BAC of .24 at around 5:30 p.m. Court documents show Heitman has a previous DWI conviction.

Heitman made her first court appearance Monday morning and has been charged with two gross misdemeanor counts of 2nd degree DWI, breaking her driver’s license restriction of alcohol, and possessing an open bottle in a vehicle.
