DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — A Waubun woman is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting law enforcement and correctional officers during a disturbance call in Detroit Lakes early Thursday morning.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Becker County District Court, 22-year-old Katie Jolene Reich is charged with two felony counts of fourth-degree assault for intentionally transferring bodily fluids onto a peace officer and a correctional employee. She is also charged with gross misdemeanor fourth-degree assault for physically assaulting a peace officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

The incident occurred shortly before 12:45 a.m. on Jan. 22 at an apartment building in Detroit Lakes, where police were called for a report of an intoxicated woman pounding on doors, screaming, and refusing to leave.

Court documents state that when officers arrived, Reich attempted to force her way into an apartment she claimed was hers. The occupant told officers it was not Reich’s residence. When officers attempted to detain her, Reich allegedly became combative.

According to the complaint, Reich kicked an officer and attempted to kick his torso while being taken into custody. During transport to the Becker County Jail, officers reportedly had to pull over after Reich began kicking the squad car’s rear window and hitting her head. Leg restraints were applied.

The complaint further alleges that Reich kicked an officer in the chest, spit on his face, and bit him on the neck and ear during the struggle. After arriving at the jail, Reich was placed in a restraint chair, where she allegedly spit on correctional staff, including a Becker County correctional officer sergeant.

A judge found probable cause to support the charges and ordered Reich to remain in custody pending further court proceedings.

If convicted, the felony assault charges carry potential sentences of up to three years and two years in prison, respectively, while the gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges carry additional possible jail time and fines.

Reich is scheduled to appear in Becker County District Court at a later date. The case remains under investigation.
