Perham, MN – Court documents have revealed more details about the break-in stabbing that happened in Perham this weekend.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office initially reported that 22-year-old Cyrus Lee Olson was arrested on Saturday morning for breaking into a woman’s apartment in Perham and stabbing her. The woman fled the apartment and a neighbor called 911. The woman was brought to Perham Hospital, but was later flown to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for treatment of serious injuries.
Court documents say that when deputies and Perham Police arrived on the scene, they located the neighbor that reported the assault. He escorted officers to the victim’s unit, where they saw fresh blood and signs of a struggle. Later, the neighbor explained to investigators that he had been in his unit, when he heard the victim scream through their adjoining interior wall. He went outside to help, but the door was locked. He slid open her window and moved her shade, and saw Olson standing over the victim, striking her with something. He attempted to intervene, but Olson continued to stab the victim.
With the victim not being in the apartment upon arrival, officers were worried she was in Olson’s apartment. Prosecutors say that deputies knocked on his door, but were met with verbal resistance from Olson. They eventually forced entry and attempted to arrest Olson, who physically resisted. Ultimately, deputies say Olson was forcefully taken into custody with the help of a K9 unit.
A bystander informed officers that they found the victim lying in the doorway of another apartment and needed medical attention. Court documents say that after the victim was taken to the hospital, deputies spoke with Olson, who said he had been sleeping the whole time and didn’t know what happened.
Later at Perham Hospital, the victim told investigators that Olson came into her room, stomped on her head, and then stabbed her, stating he was going to have sex with her. Shortly after, she was intubated and was unable to give officers any more of a statement. The Emergency Room physician told deputies that the victim sustained numerous injuries, with stab wounds between her eyebrows, to the back of the neck at the base of her skull, to her left abdomen, left hip, upper buttock and an apparent defensive wound through her left hand.
Deputies executed search warrants at both Olson’s and the victim’s residences. They located the victim’s cellphone inside Olson’s unit and observed blood in the sink and the interior of the door. They also noted dried blood on Olson’s pants and left hand and an injury to his right hand. Inside the victim’s apartment, authorities located a pair of purple handled scissors on a counter near the sink that contained blood and long hair strands consistent with her hair.
Olson has been charged with both 1st and 2nd degree attempted murder, 1st and 2nd degree assault, attempted criminal sexual conduct, and obstructing justice. He made his first court appearance Tuesday morning.
