New Law Requires MN Schools to Establish Threat Reporting System

St. Paul, MN – A new Minnesota law taking effect Wednesday requires every school district and charter school to establish an anonymous threat reporting system designed to help prevent violence.

Schools will have one year to adopt a reporting policy and until July 1, 2028, to fully implement it. Districts can either develop their own anonymous reporting system or use the statewide program already available through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The law was one of several school safety measures approved during the 2026 legislative session.
