Otter Tail County Sheriff Recognizes 8-Year-Old for Life-Saving Actions

Underwood, MN – On Monday, September 14, during the Underwood City Council meeting, Sheriff Barry Fitzgibbons had the honor of recognizing 8-year-old Kingsley Espitia with a Letter of Commendation for his courageous and selfless actions.

Sheriff Fitzgibbons said that on July 19, 2026, Kingsley was fishing from the dock at the Bass Lake Public Access in the City of Underwood when a 3-year-old child fell into the water and began struggling. While others had not yet realized what was happening, Kingsley immediately recognized the danger. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water—fully clothed—and rescued the child, bringing him safely back to shore.

Kingsley’s quick thinking, courage, and willingness to act prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.

Sheriff Fitzgibbon said, “It is important to recognize people who do great things. At such a young age, Kingsley immediately jumped into action and prevented a potentially tragic outcome. He should be very proud of his actions on July 19. He truly made a difference that day.”
