Battle Lake, MN – A man is dead following a standoff and shootout with multiple law enforcement agencies.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office says the Otter Tail County SWAT team responded to a call of a reported disturbance at a residence in the 30000 block of Twin Lakes Road in rural Battle Lake at around 5:47 p.m. on Friday, September 25. The caller reported stopping at the residence to check on a relative and finding the door barricaded. According to the caller, an adult male eventually came to the door armed with a shotgun, pointed the firearm at the caller, and told the caller they were trespassing. The caller further reported that the man struck them with the butt of the shotgun and forced them into their vehicle before returning to the residence and barricading the doors.
After arriving on the scene, the SWAT Team made attempts to communicate and negotiate with the man. During the incident, the man fired at an armored SWAT vehicle. Douglas County SWAT
and Red River Valley SWAT were subsequently requested to assist.
According to preliminary information, the man later exited the residence and pointed a firearm at law enforcement. A law enforcement officer discharged their firearm, striking the man. Officers and medical personnel rendered aid; however, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The identity of the deceased will be released at a later time.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Additional information regarding the officer-involved shooting will be released as appropriate in coordination with the
BCA.
