The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office says a vehicle broke through the ice on a lake Friday evening killing the driver. Rescue personnel were called to Lake Bemidji near Diamond Point Park at about 5:30 p-m.
A woman had managed to make it to the shore and she was taken to a nearby hospital.
A diver wearing a cold-water immersion suit recovered the man from the water. He was taken to a Bemidji hospital, then transferred to Fargo, but doctors weren’t able to save his life.
The dead man’s name hasn’t been released.
The submerged vehicle was found near the Bemidji State University campus in eight-to-10 feet of water.
Authorities say the ice at that location is only four to five inches thick.
