The president of the American Sugar Beet Growers Association is looking for a better safety net in the next farm bill.
Nate Hultgren of Raymond in west-central Minnesota says the federal sugar program needs to be updated, because they’re dealing with “some 1980’s-type pricing.”
He also says if such things as loan guarantees and support prices are going to be in the farm bill, they should update to “something that will actually help farmers when they need them.”
Hultgren says beet growers aren’t asking for a handout, just something to make sure they can survive when and if prices take a downturn.
