(MNN) — Minneapolis police report violent crime incidents jumped by 21-percent last year.
Although the numbers were already trending up in the first half of 2020, they escalated even higher after the death of George Floyd on May 25th. The city recorded five-thousand-422 violent crime incidents, including homicides, rapes, robberies and serious assaults.
Many of the assaults were committed during the widespread protests against racial injustice.
Some mental health experts point to the COVID-19 pandemic as a key factor in the increase in violent acts.
