Area Residents Without Power After Thursday Night Storm

By Dave Bishop May 12, 2022 | 9:13 PM

Both Otter Tail Power Company and Lake Region Electric Coop are working into the night to restore power to area residents.   The storm that rolled in just after seven Thursday evening brought strong winds that knocked down power lines and trees causing the outages.

If you’ve ever wondered how the power companies, go about restoring power Lake Region Electric posted this to their website.

Outages occur for a number of reasons. In the event of a large or widespread outage, we prioritize repairs in order to get the largest number of customers back on first.

  1. First, we check and repair any damaged transmission lines. These are the lines that bring power to our electrical system.
  2. Equipment or line repairs at substationswill be done next in order to transfer power from transmission lines to the main distribution lines throughout our service area.
  3. After the substations are repaired, we turn our attention to our main distribution lines, and then to tap lines, which carry electricity from the main distribution lines to smaller groups of customers.
  4. Once all distribution lines and tap lines are repaired, we begin working on service lines, which typically bring power to only one or two locations.

Restoring power during inclement weather or after a large accident can be a big job. Lake Region Electric maintains a 24-hour, 365 day-a-year dispatch center so if you should lose power, be assured we are working as quickly as possible to get your lights back on.”
