Reports of Phone Scams in Otter Tail County

By McLovin Oct 4, 2022 | 7:48 AM

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office has received recent reports of phone scams involving claims of grandchildren being in legal troubles to get money from potential victims.

The suspects sometimes use social media outlets to gather family and personal information before calling potential victims.

The initial phone calls to the potential victims often utilization a suspect that has a similar voice age to the grandchild, and use the information found in publicly posted social media to lead the victim into believing it is the grandchild.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages county residents to be immediately suspicious of similar phone calls, quickly ending scam phone calls to prevent the inadvertent release of personal information, to be cautious of posting publicly viewable information on social media, and for victims to report scams to the Sheriff’s Office or their local law enforcement.
