(Moorhead, MN) — The city engineer in Moorhead is expecting Red River spring flooding to be in the top ten or even top five list this year, but he says they will be ready.

Bob Zimmerman says the number-one tool they have is all the mitigation that’s been completed over the last 13 years which includes “The permanent improvements that have been made by the city, as well the permanent improvements that were made by the Buffalo Red River Watershed District up in the Oakport area.

Many — maybe all of those will come into play during this year’s flood event.

Zimmerman says the improvements in Moorhead include 336 property acquisitions, installing nearly 19 miles of levees and floodwalls, five removable floodwall closures, and 24 stormwater pump stations.
