Looking back at Military Appreciation Month

By Zakk Daniels Jun 1, 2023 | 11:51 AM

As May comes to a close, so does Military Appreciation Month, a time-honored tradition of recognizing and saluting those who have served in defense of our nation.

The month has been marked with remembrances, ceremonies, and celebrations across the country, all aimed at showing our gratitude for the enormous sacrifices made by our military personnel and their families.

Leighton Broadcasting, in alignment with this nationwide respect, hosted a unique contest as part of their Military Appreciation Month celebrations.

Contestants were invited to share photographs of their veteran family members, with two lucky participants selected to receive prize packages valued at $1,250.

Cindy Spilde of Battle Lake was one of the two winners.

Spilde submitted a poignant photo of her brother, David L. Kirkeby, who was a Marine who courageously served his country during the Vietnam War and tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

The other victor, Michon Samuelson, shared a picture of her son, Hunter Anderson, who proudly served in the Army.

The closing of this month does not mark the end of our appreciation but rather a reminder to continue recognizing the immense contributions of our military personnel throughout the year.

As quoted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, “Since its designation by Congress in 1999, National Military Appreciation Month is the nation’s opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of servicemembers and their families.”

We are deeply indebted to them, and it’s our collective responsibility as a nation to ensure that they are honored, supported, and remembered.

On behalf of our nation’s heroes and the team at Leighton Broadcasting, JK Sports & Outdoors expressed their gratitude.

Thank you for supporting our veterans.
