The Fergus Falls Police Department has issued a warning to the community after receiving reports of a wave of scams targeting local residents.
The scams involve fraudulent requests for money through various communication channels, including text messages and phone calls.
In one reported incident, individuals have received text messages from someone posing as a local pastor, requesting monetary assistance.
The fake pastor asks recipients to purchase gift cards and then share the card information via text or email.
However, the police department has clarified that this is a scam and has urged residents not to comply with such requests.
They advise that no financial transactions should be carried out unless the legitimacy of the request has been verified through direct communication with the person involved.
The Fergus Falls Police Department also highlighted that scammers have adopted tactics involving phone calls where they impersonate members of the police department.
The scammers coerce individuals into obtaining gift cards or making Western Union transfers, claiming it’s for legal or official purposes.
The police department emphasized that they would never solicit funds through such means and urged residents to exercise caution.
As part of their statement, the police department shared an example of a fraudulent text message that one of their officers received, supposedly from their own pastor.
Fortunately, the officer recognized the scam and verified the situation with their church, confirming it to be a fraudulent attempt.
To report suspicious activity or if individuals have questions about potentially fraudulent communications, they are advised to contact the Fergus Falls Police Department during business hours at (218) 332-5555.
For after-hours concerns, residents can reach out to dispatch at (218) 998-8555.
