HAWLEY, Minn. (KFGO) – A major overnight fire in Hawley late Sunday night (February 25th) has burned down a grain elevator.

After several hours, it was brought under control.17 fire departments from as far away as Moorhead and Detroit Lakes responded to the call.Police Chief Joe Backlund says there was initial concern that embers from the large blaze would spread to other buildings.

Backlund says he believes the Hawley Elevator is leased and mostly used by one farmer.  Mayor Sean Mork says with the amount of water used to battle, residents have been asked to limit their water use.

Fire crews have been pouring hundreds of gallons of water a minute on the flames.  The fire was reported before midnight by a passing BNSF Railway crew.

No injuries have been reported.
