The members of the Minnesota Senate honored and held a moment of silence for the passing of former Senator Calvin ‘Cal’ Larson of Pelican Rapids on the Senate Floor yesterday (April 4th).
Senator Jordan Rasmusson of Fergus Falls began by speaking to the work Senator Larson did for both Otter Tail County and the state as a whole.
He concluded his time by asking for a moment of silence to be held.
Some of Larson’s fellow Senators also spoke in honor of his legacy.
In a later statement, Senator Rasmusson said, “Senator Larson’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family and community. His tireless advocacy for veterans, passion for education, and steadfast support for his constituents have made a meaningful difference in the lives of Minnesotans. My prayers are with Senator Larson’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Senator Larson passed away on April 1st at the Cottage in Detroit Lakes.
He was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1966, serving 8 years before retiring to focus on family and his independent insurance agency.
He reentered politics, serving as a state senator from 1986 to 2006.
Senator Larson first ran for the State Legislature when candidates ran without a party designation for the general election — the original No Labels – which he wished would return for today’s elections.
He worked with Republicans and Democrats to improve the lives of his constituents and the citizens of Minnesota.
His colleagues from St. Paul considered him their “extra senator” for his support of the Capitol city, and one of his Iron Range colleagues called Senator Larson his favorite Republican.
His long list of legislative achievements ranged from establishing the Fergus Falls Veterans Home, improving the local community college and establishing Glendalough State Park to his education committee work in the 1960’s that helped open the door for the first Minnesota State High School League girls’ sports.
