Protect Your Identity: Free Shred Day at MMFCU June 11
Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union is hosting free Community Shred Days at our Fergus Falls Office on June 11 from 3-4pm.
Shredding documents that have your personal information is a great way to protect yourself from identity theft by keeping the wrong person from finding your social security number, financial account numbers, credit card numbers and any other valuable identifying data.
Through a partnership with Paper Storm Document Shredding, Mid Minnesota is offering free shredding at all our locations, including this local option:
Tuesday, June 11, 3-4pm at 1820 West Lincoln Avenue, Fergus Falls
We ask you limit your documents to three boxes.
Mid Minnesota staff will be on hand to assist you.
Shred Day will take place rain or shine.
MMFCU also recommends these additional ways to protect your identity:
- Do not respond or click links if you receive a text or email you are not expecting. Never assume it is legitimate even if it looks like it is coming from a business or government agency you would normally trust. Instead, contact the organization using a phone number or email address you can verify on a bill, a statement, the back of your debit or credit card, or an official website.
- Don’t give out personal information unless you’ve contacted the business or government agency. Be suspicious. Con artists can be very convincing: They may ask account related questions, or sound threatening, or sometimes seem too good to be true.
- Monitor your accounts regularly. MMFCU online banking and mobile app allows you to do this anytime from anywhere and set-up alerts.
- Review your credit report at least once a year at: annualcreditreport.com or better yet use Savvy Money in MMFCU online banking and mobile app to provide monthly updates on your credit report.
- Empty your wallet of extras. Remove your social security card and credit cards you do not use often. Carry your birth certificate and passport only when necessary.
- Keep an emergency list of all your financial account numbers and credit card accounts in a safe location, such as a safe deposit box at MMFCU.
- Strengthen your passwords: it is a proven fact that password length is the best way to ensure it is not compromised. Use a phrase or sentence that uses numbers, lowercase letters, uppercase letters and special characters. Don’t use names or phrases about yourself; and use different passwords for everything.
If you suspect that you are victim of identity theft or any type of fraud contact MMFCU and the local authorities right away. We are here to help.
