Former Fergus Falls Mayor Ben Schierer is running for Minnesota State Auditor.

Fergus Falls, MN – Former mayor of Fergus Falls Ben Schierer has announced that he is running for Minnesota State Auditor.

Schierer brings with him 16 years of local government experience, including two terms as mayor of Fergus Falls and his most recent work with West Central Initiative as the Director of Civic Partnerships. His announcement came on Thursday, September 4th, shortly after the current State Auditor Julie Blaha announced that she would not be seeking reelection in 2026. The State Auditor oversees the financial activity and the tens of billions of tax dollars spent by local governments across Minnesota.

“I’m running for State Auditor to ensure every city and county has the resources and oversight needed to serve Minnesotans,” Schierer said. “Tessa and I are raising our five kids in Fergus Falls and understand the importance of strong communities. As a former mayor and small business owner, I know firsthand that every dollar matters. The State Auditor oversees $40 billion in local government spending, and I will make sure tax dollars are used effectively, efficiently, and fairly for every Minnesotan.”

The DFL candidate emphasizes that the State Auditor’s office is a partner to local governments. With responsibilities that include the Rural Finance Authority, Housing Finance Agency, and State Pension Board, the office plays a vital role in strengthening communities across Minnesota. Schierer says his vision is centered on providing cities and counties with the fiscal clarity, tools, and collaboration they need to thrive.

“Democrats need to prioritize rural issues if we are going to be a party that truly represents the entire state,” Schierer said. “I’ve won elections in one of the reddest parts of Minnesota because I know how to build trust, form strong coalitions, and deliver results. As State Auditor, I will bring that same commitment to making sure every community, whether urban, suburban, or rural, has a voice in shaping our future.”

Schierer has been endorsed by multiple Minnesota leaders, including former Congressman Collin Peterson, who said, “Ben Schierer has been a proven leader as Mayor of Fergus Falls, showing he can get things done for his community and for our state. He’s a champion for rural Minnesota and someone who understands the values and challenges we face. The DFL needs leaders from rural areas to ensure we represent the entire state, and I know Ben will do exactly that as State Auditor. I’m proud to endorse him.”
