Multiple Hospitalized From Icy Crashes on I-94 Sunday Afternoon

At 1:29 p.m., a semi was stopped in traffic on westbound I-94 with an SUV stopped behind the semi. A pickup with a utility trailer hit the SUV and then the semi, coming to rest partially underneath the tractor-trailer.

The 19-year-old driver of the pickup, Ethan Gronwold of Miles City, Montana, (formerly of Fergus Falls) has non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. A passenger in the SUV that was hit also has non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Lake Region Hospital.

Around 1:44 p.m., a vehicle heading eastbound on I-94 in the same area was cut off by a driver and braked. A third driver didn’t realize the driver braked and crashed into the rear of the vehicle. That driver, 22-year-old Mckenna Kaszynski of Fergus Falls, was taken to Lake Region Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other driver was not hurt.

Minnesota State Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow wrote on X that some crashes were blocking westbound travel on I-94 west of Fergus Falls. Detours were put in place for westbound traffic until one lane was reopened around 4:00 p.m.

Two vehicles stopped on the interstate due to the congestion were hit in a chain reaction involving a total of four vehicles. Three people from Everett, Washington suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to Lake Region Hospital. The other drivers were not hurt.
