Fergus Falls, MN – The Fergus Falls Fire Department responded to a house fire early Monday morning that caused $20,000 worth of damage.
Fire Chief Ryan Muchow says that when fire crews arrived to the house on East Fir Avenue around 3:14 a.m., the sole occupant of the home was standing outside. Smoke was coming from the two sides of the house and the flames could be seen through the front window.
Muchow says the first engine on the scene had the fire under control within five minutes of arriving. Additional crews conducted a search, ventilated the smoke, and extinguished remaining hot spots. After the fire was extinguished, the windows were boarded up to protect the interior of the home. The fire department was on scene for an hour and a half.
Muchow says that the cause of the fire is undetermined after investigation, however it is not suspicious. No one was injured.
Muchow is reminding residents to keep at least a 3’ clear space around heating appliances, ensure chimney flues are clean and in good condition, and plug accessory heaters directly into outlets. He also stresses the importance of working smoke alarms. Muchow says the Fire Department, in partnership with the Red Cross, may be able to provide and install up to 3 battery powered alarms in owner-occupied residents.
The Fire Department was assisted by the Fergus Falls Police Department, Ringdahl EMS, Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, and Otter Tail Power Company.
