New York Mills, MN – On Thursday, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office released information about two fires that damaged homes in New York Mills and Deer Creek.
Deputies say that a homeowner reported a fire in her home off of County Highway 50 in rural Deer Creek at around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, emergency responders found smoke coming from an upstairs bedroom.
Crews from the Deer Creek and Henning Fire Departments extinguished the fire, which was contained to the bedroom. Deputies say there was minor smoke damage to other areas of the house. No injuries were reported.
At around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a garage fire at a home on Walker Avenue in New York Mills. Upon arrival, crews from the New York Mills and Perham Fire Departments found the flames had fully engulfed the garage and had spread to the home.
Deputies say the garage was a total loss and the home suffered significant damage. Residents of the home were able to evacuate with no injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office says the causes of both fires are under investigation, but they are believed to be non-suspicious in nature. The State Fire Marshall’s Office is assisting deputies with the investigation.
